Hello, I am an enthusiastic and curious creative, always striving to stay inspired and have new
experiences. I have a deep passion for design as well as making and writing music and even
more so, using it for social good. I am always eager to help and be part of designing for social
good and change and believe that there is no value in design if it’s not being used to uplift and
help people in one way or another. With that said, my design passions lie in social campaigning,
branding, illustration and film.
“Even in the darkest night, I glow in the dark.”– Khaya Dlanga.
I am a hardworking, dedicated creative– always ready to challenge myself and to step up to the next level. In order to communicate effectively in as many ways as possible, I have become a multilingual ninja– I speak German, English, Afrikaans and French (and am currently learning to speak Italian). I like thinking laterally, while being inspired by the things around me. I have a hunger for knowledge and learning new skills. My interests lie in traditional advertising, digital advertising and design. I am a firm believer in the KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid) principle.
“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try” – Dr. Seuss. I’m a multidimensional thinker, if I may say so myself. That’s what this course has taught me. I wouldn’t want to ever settle upon average ideas again, that’s just too boring! So I always try and push myself creatively and I love anything that is related to social design campaigning for change. I’m interested in strategy and a human centered design approach to solving issues in society. I’d jump at the idea of using my talent to help in any way possible. And I’m also crazy about editorial layout design, illustration and typography!
“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”
I am passionate, dedicated, inspired and daring. I am constantly growing as a designer and broadening my horizons as a design thinker. Design is how I think and it is what I do.
I came to South Africa to learn how to use my passion for storytelling and images in building my dream of establishing much needed institutions for creative expression, cultural reflection and endless innovation in Africa. When not plotting to turn the DRC into a creative paradise, I am either writing or illustrating my graphic novels, playing Pokémon or day-dreaming about eating my way through the world and experiencing its might and beauty.
There is always a way to better this world. Design, for me is that way. Solving human problems through design, animation or any form of technology is what I do. My passion stems from my love for technology, working and interacting with people and the power that design brings to changing this world. My skillset varies from print media to back-end design, I do however have an obsession with animation and motion graphics. The complexity behind creating a great end product and the process of bringing something to life, that was tucked away in someone’s imagination, fuels my creative abilities.
At the end of the day, we were all taught the same skills. And I could go on about
how professional, friendly and hard working I am, but that’s (probably) been said.
So, what sets me apart is I’m uniquely me. I generally fit in anywhere – you’d love
I’m all about design and illustration. My passion for design started from a very young age when I started playing around with character designs for popular kids shows like Pokemon and Dragonball Z. I tend to add some sort of sentimental value to my work being it my sense of humour , some idea or concept of my Irish heritage or my love for video games. I love exploring all fields of design but my passion lies in Animation/Film, Website and Interface design and Illustration.
In a few words - I am hardworking, imaginative, resourceful and above all, always curious. For me, design is a multi-faceted process of constant exploration. I love the idea of creating a tangible deliverable and being able to successfully communicate a message. There is something rather magical about the intertwining of seemingly random words and images that when collated in just the right way are capable of saying exactly what you mean. I have a strong interest in design narrative and idea generation – the place where it all begins. After four years of studying I am only just beginning to grasp an understanding of the overwhelming impact design has on our daily lives. There isn’t anything I would rather be a part of. I am always up for anything new, but my interests and skills lie in editorial, copywriting, branding, typography, illustration and designing for social change.
“I try and work on instinct. The rules, as much as
people think there are rules, are nonsense.”¬
- Richard Russell
My name is Luani Combrink and I sometimes do
things a little differently. I speak two languages,
Afrikaans and English and I appreciate good jokes.
My particular interest lies in illustration, and the
most fascinating books to me, are the ones with
pictures. I make it my mission to find a way to in-
clude illustration in whatever I’m working on. I
have strong convictions about a sometimes unim-
portant things and one of these days I’m going to
create something fantastic.
Hi, I am Madelein. I am a driven designer that works hard to achieve intricately, delicate design work. For me, however, design is not all serious and heavy. I try to find the lighter side of each project, push as much positivity into it as possible and make it a worthwhile journey. Working under pressure has thus never been a problem for me because I enjoy every moment, give it my all and learn as much as I can during the process. This is who I am in a nutshell.
I do this because I love ideas and their capacity to change lives. I balance my inspiration with insight and my imagination with clarity. I am meticulous, organised and purposeful in my design habits. I believe the best inspiration is found through living and doing ‘human’ things. People are inevitably the client. My areas of interest are editorial design, layout design, branding, copywriting, photography and ideation. “Art is a means of living a life, not a means of making a living.” The arts has a way of softening people and changing their perceptions. I cherish the way design allows me to be a part of this process.
I grew up on a quote that said, ‘people may doubt what you say, but they will always believe what you do’. Personally this is a very true representation of the design world, and that makes it something exciting I want to be part of.
I want to challenge the norm and create solutions that speak louder than words. I can go and write a bunch of elaborate sounding words to try and sell myself, but hopefully my work already does that. This is only the start of my journey and I want to make it an compelling one.
Enthused by all that life has to offer, I have a love for people and the design that is crafted for them; either for beauty or for function. From the jewels that adorn our necks to the messages that are communicated daily through all kinds of carefully considered visuals. It’s all design and it’s all simply wonderful to me.
